I have some mug rug tutorials like this binding mug rug and this oval mug rug if you look for more styles. Why mug rug? Because it is larger than a coaster and smaller than a placemat.
Coaster usually only fits for a coffee cup. A mug rug will have enough space for a cup and a couple of cookies or muffins.
If you like to have a morning coffee or afternoon tea, then make yourself a set of this mug rug, or give it to someone you know who loves a cup of coffee or two. I should mention here that I love this Valentine mug so much. Isn’t it super cute?
This project is super easy to make. If you don’t have new fabric available, then upcycle the forgotten shirts or that extra pillowcase if you have any.
Material For Making Fabric Heart Mug Rug
I use fat quarter fabric sheets for the rectangular mug rug. The heart shape is from my fabric scraps.
I use fat quarter cotton quilt fabric because it is easy to sew and lots of fun prints. You might want to prewash the fabric first if you are using new material to reduce shrinkage.

Useful Tips For Making Heart Mug Rug
It is easier to sew if you use double sheet heart fabric instead of folding around the edge if using only one sheet of material.
The stitching line mark on the heart shape is for the guide to sew along the curve. Sometimes, it isn’t easy when sewing on the curve shape, so the marking line will make the job easier.
You can use one heart fabric or two heart fabric overlapping. You can also put heart fabric on both sides of the mug rug.
Use the heart fabric’s contrast color or bold prints against the rectangle mug rug for popping it up and as a bold statement. You can use any other color scheme for this project. It doesn’t have to be pink, red or purple.
