Sewing the Sunflower Coaster with this tutorial is easy. Using fabric scraps and sunflower petals from various yellow fabric prints, you can create a beautiful coaster or mug rug for the fall season, which is also great for gift ideas.
Easy To Sew Sunflower Coaster
The fabric sunflower coaster is one of many ways to celebrate the late summer or fall since trees and flowers tend to have bright yellow, orange, red or brown colors. Most sunflowers also bloom in the late summer and early fall to harvest the seeds. Sunflowers are also beautiful for the fall season bouquet or centrepiece.

To make the ray florets of this sunflower coaster is the same way by threading the petals like making this fabric flower.
Supply To Make Sunflower Mug Rug Or Coaster
Use yellow fabric scraps with various prints for the fun mix-and-match flower petals. If you use a fat quarter of yellow fabric, all the petals will have a uniform print.
I found the brown fabric print that looks like the sunflower disc floret. You can use any brown fabric print or even orange or darker yellow for the disc floret, as sunflowers naturally have various disc floret colors.
The brown and green fabrics are 6″ in diameter each, so you can use scrap or layer-cake-size fabric.
- Brown fabric (1 piece of layer cake size)
- Green fabric (1 piece of layer cake size)
- Yellow fabric (1 piece of a fat quarter or various yellow fabric scraps)

- Pen compass or 6″ diameter circle object, like a small plate
- Disappeared ink fabric marker, I use the dual-purpose fabric marker
- Pin or quilting clips
- Thread
- Hand sewing needle
- Ruler
- Chopstick
- Sewing machine
- Ironing machine or clothes iron

Trace the 6″ diameter circle object like a small plate on the fusible fleece, brown, yellow and green fabric.
If a small 6″ diameter object is unavailable, use a piece of paper and a pen compass to make a 6″ diameter template. Position the pen compass 3″ long. Then move the pen compass in a circular motion to create a 6″ diameter circle
If using smaller yellow fabric scraps, fold the paper template in half and trace it on the fabric to make a half-circle.
Or fold it in four equal parts to make a quarter of a circle, then trace it on the yellow fabric to make several quadrants of the circle.
From tracing the circle on each material to make one sunflower coaster, you would need:
1 piece of 6″ diameter brown fabric
1 piece of 6″ diameter green fabric
1 piece of 6″ diameter fusible fleece
4 or 6 pieces of 6″ diameter yellow fabric (more yellow fabric circles if needed)
Fold the yellow fabric in four equal parts and mark each folding spot.
Draw the lines to connect each marked spot, then cut the fabric along the marked line to make four quadrants. Add more quarters of yellow fabric circles as needed.
Draw a line 0.25″ from one of the straight edges for seam allowance. Fold the quarter of the yellow fabric circle into half by aligning both straight edges and the right side of the fabric inside.
Sew along the 0.25″ seam allowance.
Clip the pointy end, and turn the yellow fabric right side out.
Use a chopstick to push the pointy corner.
Put the stitched edge in the center, then press the fabric with a clothes iron. Continue the process with all quarters of yellow fabric circles.
With the stitched line facing down, baste each yellow fabric quadrant with a hand-sewing needle along the raw edge with a single long-running stitch.
Add as many yellow fabric quadrants as you need.
I used 24 pieces for one sunflower coaster.
Pull the thread on one end so that the yellow fabric looks more like flower petals
Adjust the yellow petals to fit the circumference of a 6″ diameter circle.
Pin the fusible fleece and the brown fabric with the right side facing up.
Pin the flower petals fabric on top of the brown fabric, with the raw edges of both fabrics aligned.
Sew along the raw edge with a 0.25″ seam allowance.
Pin the green fabric with the right side facing down. Sew along the raw edge with a 0.5″ seam allowance, and skip around 2″ for the opening gap.
Turn the sunflower coaster right side out through the opening.
Use a chopstick to push the edge and shape the circle.
Fold the opening inward, and press the coaster with a clothes iron.
Topstitch the circle about 1/8″ from the edge, and close the opening at the same time.
The sunflower coaster is ready to use now. The final size is 5″ diameter for the center disc and around 9.5″ diameter from petal to petal for the overall coaster size.
You can also use this fabric flower as a vase mat when it is not being used as a coaster. The fabric sunflower will compliment the fall season flower bouquet.
