This phone pouch is a great gift-giving idea and helpful for carrying a phone and some cash or cards for a small errand when you want to avoid carrying a purse, like walking the pet or getting something to the closest store. If you prefer a sling bag, this crossbody phone bag with pockets is also easy to make.
Supply To Make Phone Pouch Bag
If you want to make a phone pouch with the same print on the wristlet, inner and outer layers, use one piece of fat-quarter fabric. But if you want to make a phone pouch with two different prints on the wristlet, inner, and outer layers, use two pieces of fat-eight fabrics. Fat-eight fabric size is a fat quarter divided into two.
You can make this DIY phone pouch from fabric scraps if it has enough measurements for the inner and outer fabric layers. The measurement formula for the fabric needed if you have a different phone size is included in the helpful tips section after the step-by-step tutorial below.
- 2 pieces of fabric 17″ x 5.5″
- 1 piece of fusible fleece 17″ x 5.5″
- 1 piece of fabric for the strap 17″ x 2″
- 1 pair snap button
- Snap button plier kit
- Keyring and D ring swivel lobster clasp
- Disappeared ink marker. I use this dual-purpose fabric marker.
- Pin or quilting clips
- Chopstick
- Ruler
- Sewing machine
- Ironing machine
The fasteners can be a pair of plastic snap buttons like the one I use here, a sew-on snap button, or a regular button on the pocket side with a buttonhole on the flap.

With the wrong side of the fabric for the strap facing up, fold the fabric in half lengthwise, fold each long side toward the center fold line, and fold again so that both folded edges align.
Press the fabric strap with a clothes iron. Topstitch the fabric strap on both long edges. Cut the fabric strap 2″ for the keyring tab.
Slide the lobster swivel clasp into the fabric strap, align both ends and sew it together. Slide the clasp to the stitched edge, then turn the fabric strap so both ends will be inside the strap. Sew the fabric strap close to the clasp.
Mark the spot on one of the fabric rectangles with the wrong side facing up, as shown in the image above.
On one short side for the flap, it is 1.75″ down from both top corners. On the other short side for the pocket, it is 0.5″ left and right from the bottom corners.
Use a small plate or protractor to draw a curve line connecting the 1.75″ marked spots and an inward curve line connecting the 0.5″ marked spots.
Pin the fusible fleece, inner layer fabric with the right side facing up, and outer layer fabric with the right side facing down.
Trim the material along both curved lines.
Fold the fabric for the keyring tab, then pin it on the inner layer fabric, on the edge of the inward curve side for the pocket, 1.5″ from the corner.
Sew along the edge with 0.25″ seam allowance, and skip 3″ for the opening gap on one of the long edges.
Trim the fusible fleece from the stitching line.
Turn the pouch right side out.
Use a chopstick to push all corners.
Fold the opening gap inward, then press the pouch with a clothes iron. Position the phone on the inner layer of fabric and measure it about 2.5″ from the top curved edge of the flap to the phone’s top edge. Adjust the measurement if your phone is a different size than mine. Fold the pocket side over the phone.
Pin the pouch, then topstitch along the edge and close the opening gap at the same time. Mark the spot for the snap button on the flap and the pocket.
Attach the snap button. Attach the keyring to the tab, and attach the clasp to the keyring. The phone pouch is ready to use now, and the size of the pouch is 5″ x 7″.
Helpful tips:
Measurement formula for how much fabric is needed if you want to make a different-size phone pouch:
Length of the phone x 2 + 4″
Width of the phone + 2.25″
From that formula, I measure the fabric as follows:
My phone length is 6.5″ x 2 = 13″ + 4″ = 17″ for the length of the fabric
My phone width is 3.25″ + 2.25″ = 5.5″ for the width of the fabric
If you use two different fabric prints for the inner and outer layers, you can make two wristlets using the leftovers from these fabrics. Then, the wristlet can be swapped to match the inner or outer layer only.
