This tutorial will guide you on how to sew a ruffled fabric basket with a loop handle, a large basket with a frilly accent for storage or for a DIY fabric Easter basket.
Sewing Ruffle Edge Fabric Basket
Frilly fabrics are making a comeback in fashion and accessories this year. It is a bit tricky to wear a frilly piece on clothing, but I personally love it for ruffle sleeve shirts or as a peplum blouse.

In this sewing project, you will make a fabric basket with a ruffle accent, because the frilly top is such an adorable addition to a plain fabric basket.
Supplies To Make a Ruffle Fabric Basket
The fabric basket pattern is very easy to follow, as it is just sewing four rectangular fabrics and adding a long frilly accent to the top edge.

Use two fat quarters or a half yard of fabric to make one basket. Use two fat quarters with different color and prints for a contrasting look on the inner, outer, basket handle and frilly fabric. This basket is using a medium-weight fusible fleece.

- 2 of 10” x 14” fabric for the inner layer (25.4 cm x 35.6 cm)
- 2 of 10” x 14” fabric for the outer layer (25.4 cm x 35.6 cm)
- 2 of 9.5” x 14” fusible fleece (24.1 cm x 35.6 cm)
- 1 of 4” x 18” fabric for the basket handle (10.2 cm x 45.7 cm)
- 1 of 1” x 18” fusible fleece for the basket handle (2.54 cm x 45.7 cm)
- 2 of 4” x 21” fabric for the ruffled (10.2 cm x 53.3 cm)
- Disappeared ink fabric marker. I use this dual-purpose fabric marker
- Quilting clips or pins
- Thread
- Scissor
- Hand sewing needle
- Sewing machine
- Clothes iron

Use a clothes iron to fuse the fusible fleece to the wrong side of both outer layer fabrics.
Pin both outer layer fabrics together, with the right sides facing each other, the short edges are for the left and right sides. Sew along the left, bottom, and right sides of the fabric with a 0.5” or 1.2 cm seam allowance, leaving the top side open.
Pin both inner layer fabrics together with the right sides facing each other, the short edges are for the left and right sides. Sew along the left, bottom, and right sides of the fabric with a 0.5” or 1.2 cm seam allowance, leaving the top side open.

Pull the fabric from the center so that the left and right seams are aligned, and the bottom edge forms a diamond shape. Create a box corner by measuring both corners 5” (12.7 cm). Then sew along the 5” marked line.

Clip the extra fabric on both corners 0.5” (1.2cm) from the stitched line.

To make the handle, fold the fabric strip in half lengthwise. Open it, then place the fusible fleece strip along one long edge on the folding line.
Fold both edges of the fabric toward the center, then fold it again so that the frayed edge is inside the fold. Sew along both long edges.

How to make ruffled fabric, pin the two fabric strips together with the right sides facing each other. Sew along one of the short edges with a 0.25” or (0.6 cm) seam allowance. (Skip this step if you are using a 42” long fabric).
Fold both short edges 0.25” inward, then sew them. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise, with the wrong side of the fabric inside.

Stitch the fabric 0.25” from the fray edge.
There are a few ways to make ruffled fabric:
- Use a sewing machine by decreasing the tension, and set the stitch length to the highest number. Use a straight stitch to baste the fabric. Leave the thread long on both ends. Pull the bottom thread from the bobbin to gather. Knot the thread to keep the ruffle in place.
- The other method is easier, but it takes a bit longer time. Use a hand sewing needle with a simple straight stitch 0.25” from the fray edge. Pull the thread on both ends. Knot the thread to keep the ruffle in place.

Turn the outer layer basket right side out. Pin the fray edge of the fabric ruffled to the top edge of the outer fabric basket. Overlap both ends of the ruffled fabric.
Pin both ends of the basket handle across each other on top of the ruffled fabric. Sew along the frayed edge with 0.25” seam allowance.

Insert the outer layer basket into the inner layer basket, align the top edges of both pieces, keep the ruffled piece between the layers, and pin it in place. Sew along the top edge with 0.5” (1.2cm) seam allowance, and skip 3” (7.6 cm) for the opening gap.

Turn the basket right side out through the opening. Fold the opening gap inward by adjusting both layers to keep the ruffle in place, and pin it.

Sew along the edge and close the opening gap at the same time. Carefully use a clothes iron if the basket looks a bit wrinkly.

The ruffled edge fabric basket is ready to use now for storage or a fun and cheerful DIY Easter basket.
Size Of The Frilly Fabric Basket
The final size of the ruffle accent fabric basket is 6.25” (15.9 cm) tall from the base to the top of the basket, 8” (20.3 cm) tall from the base to the top of the ruffled fabric. The base is 7.5” (19.5 cm) long and 5” (12.7 cm) wide.

The basket is large enough for multiple Easter eggs and some goodies, making it a great Easter gift idea. This frilly top fabric basket is also a great storage basket for toys, TP rolls, or hand towels.
