This easy, reversible, and insulated hot pad converts to a bowl cozy is one of the sewing projects from fat quarter fabrics, and is great for everyday use in the kitchen.

Easy Insulated Hot Pad

When we say convertible, we thought about a convertible car. But of course, we are not talking about cars now. We are going to sew something convertible. One item that serves a dual purpose is a great gift idea.

You can use it the same as a large hot pad for a casserole dish, a large bowl cozy, a bread basket liner, or a fabric basket.

Supplies To Make a Convertible Insulated Hot Pad

Use a half-yard fabric or two fat-quarter fabrics for this project. Insulated batting is optional.

Blue pan on the colorful hot pad.

Also, if it is too thick, use only two layers of cotton batting, or one layer of cotton batting with one layer of insulated batting.

Insulated batting helps keep the food warm. Cotton batting helps absorb the condensation from the insulated batting.

Disclaimer: This bowl cozy convertible hot pad is NOT for microwave use. Insulated batting is NOT microwave-safe. It will catch fire in the microwave because of the metal layer on the insulated batting.
The cozy or the hot pad is for serving the dishes on the table only.

  • 2 pcs of 15″ x 15″ fabrics
  • 2 pcs of 15″ x 15″ cotton batting
  • 1 piece of 15″ x 15″ insulated batting, I use this Pellon Insul-Bright
  • 5 pcs of 1″ x 18″ and 2 pcs of 1″ x 15″, all from the leftover of the fat quarter fabric
  • Disappeared ink fabric marker, my favorite is this dual-purpose fabric marker
  • Quilting clips and pins
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Chopstick
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Clothes iron

Blue fabric and battings.

To make the hot pad, layer all materials as follows: cotton batting, insulated batting, cotton batting, right side of fabric facing up, right side of fabric facing down.

Sewing blue fabric for hot pad.

Pin all materials, then sew along the edge with 0.5″ seam allowance. Skip 4″ for the opening gap.

Turning blue fabric right side out.

Trim the extra battings from the stitching line. Clip all four corners to reduce bulk.

Turn the hot pad right side out through the opening gap. Use a chopstick to push each corners.

Fold the opening gap inward and pin it. Press the hot pad with a clothes iron. Sew the hot pad along the edge and close the opening at the same time.

Sewing blue fabric strips.

To make the fabric string, lay one fabric strip right side up, then place the short end of another strip right side down on the short end of the first to form a 90° angle. Draw a diagonal line from the left top corner to the right bottom corner.

Blue fabric strip for string.

Sew along the diagonal line. Clip the extra fabric from the stitched line. Continue sewing each fabric strip. Once all stitched together, the fabric strip would be 120″.

With the wrong side facing up, fold the fabric strip in half lengthwise, then open it and fold both edges toward the center. Fold it again so that the frayed edge of the fabric is inside the fold.

Four blue fabric strings.

Sew the fabric strip along the folded edge to form a fabric string. Divide the string into four equal lengths.

Sewing fabric string to the pad.

Measure each edge of the hot pad, mark the center, which is 7.5″ from both left and right corners, then mark 3″ toward the center of the hot pad.
Fold the string in half, then pin the fold on the 3″ mark.
Measure 5.5″ on the edge from the left and right corners. Pin the string at the 5.5″ marks, so that the string resembles a V letter now.

Floral and blue hot pads.

Repeat the process for each edge of the hot pad. Sew the string on the V shape.

Clear glass bowl on the fabric cozy.

Tie each string on all four edges to form a bowl cozy.

White pan on the floral hot pad.

Loosen the tie off and let it flat so that it forms a large hot pad. The convertible bowl cozy, which turns into a hot pad, is ready to use now.

Size Of The Hot Pad Bowl Cozy

When used as a bowl cozy, it fits a large salad bowl. The picture below shows an 8.5″ bowl. Because of the string on all four sides, the bowl cozy can be adjusted to fit any size bowl.

Blue pan on the larger hot pad.

When used as a hot pad, it forms a large 15″ x 15″ hot pad. The pad is insulated and fits any size or shape of casserole pans.

The image above shows a turquoise 9″ x 13″ casserole pan, which is a set of two beautiful color and floral print pans from the Pioneer Woman brand. The image below is a smaller 7.7″ x 11″ floral-print pan, which fits perfectly on the hot pad.

If it is not for a bowl cozy, it can be use as a bread basket liner, or a fabric basket.
