Turn two pieces of layer-cake sized fabrics into a mini fabric basket for storing small items or a treat bag for a gift idea.
Easy Square Fabric Basket
There are lots of small and large baskets made of rattan, paper, plastic, or wood for a stackable option you can find at the store. But it can be difficult to find the smallest basket for a specific purpose sometimes, the basket that is foldable, small, and practical for storage when you don’t use it.

This square basket is one of the practical ones, saves on space for storage when you don’t use it, and is also a fun sewing project from precut fabric or upcycled fabric scraps.
Supplies To Make Fabric Basket
The fabric basket pattern is a simple square fabric with a traced 3″ square on each corner.

The fusible fleece is optional when using a thicker fabric, such as flannel, outdoor fabric, interior decor fabric, or canvas.
I use a quilt-weight cotton fabric leftover from this DIY crossbody phone bag and a bundle of fat-quarter fabric from this round bowl cozy.

To make the basket, layer all the square materials together. Measure 3″ x 3″ on each corner of both fabrics.

Trim all 3″ square corners. Use a clothes iron to fuse the fusible fleece on the fabric for the outer layer.

Pin each corner, then sew along the dart with 0.25″ seam allowance.

Repeat the sewing process on all four corners for the lining fabric.

To make the basket handle, place the fabric with the wrong side facing up, then fold it in half lengthwise, then fold it in half lengthwise and press it to make a center crease.

Open it up, then fold both long edges inward toward the center fold, then fold it again so that both fray edges are inside the fold.

Topstitch the fabric strip along both edges. Divide into 2 pcs of 5″ each. Pin the basket handle on the outer fabric.

Pin both fabrics together with the right side facing each other. Sew along the top edge with 0.25″ seam allowance, skip 2″ for the opening gap. Turn the fabric right side out through the opening.

Push the edge with a chopstick, then press the fabric basket with a clothes iron. Pin the basket handle up. Topstitch along the hem.

The mini fabric basket is ready to use.
