Easy Leaf Coaster Tutorial

This leaf coaster tutorial with a simple quilt is a simple sewing project for the summer and fall seasons and is great for scrap fabric buster projects.

Easy Quilted Leaf Coaster

The finished item is slightly larger than a standard coaster but slightly smaller than a mug rug.

This coaster is a different version from the Three Leaf Mug Mat tutorial I shared a few years ago, but it is still an adorable coaster to make.

Quilted Leaf Coaster Tutorial

To make your own Leaf Template, prepare the 8″ x 8″ paper, draw lines with measurements as it show on the image below. Trace the circle paper from point A to B, B to C, C to B, and B to A.

Cut the paper leaf template.

To make the loop tab, put the wrong side of the small rectangular piece of fabric up, fold the fabric in half lengthwise, open it, then fold both long edges toward the center fold, and fold it again so that the frayed edges are inside.

Topstitch along both long edges.

To make the back side of the coaster, with the right sides of both fabrics facing each other, sew the two rectangular fabrics together along one long side with a 0.25″ seam allowance, leaving a 2″ opening. Press the seam allowance down on one side.

To make the coaster, pin together fusible fleece, the wrong side of the square fabric facing down, and the wrong side of the other fabric piece facing up

Trace the leaf template on the fabric, aligning the template’s long center line with the stitch in the middle of the fabric.

Pin the fabric loop to the bottom of the leaf, between the two fabric squares. Sew along the traced line.

Trim the material 0.25″ from the stitching line. Turn the leaf coaster right side out through the opening. Use a chopstick to push the edge. Press the coaster with a clothes iron.

Topstitch the coaster along the center to close the opening gap. Draw some leaf veins using a disappearing ink fabric marker.

To make simple leaf veins, topstitch the coaster back and forth along the lines.

The easy way is to sew along one line to the end, keep the needle down, raise the presser foot, turn the fabric around, lower the presser foot, then sew along the previous stitch.

Once the leaf veins quilt is finished, topstitch along the coaster edge.

The quilted leaf coaster is now ready to use.

The Size Of The Leaf Coaster

The coaster is around 7.5″ long and 6.25″ wide if you draw a straight line from edge to edge. It has enough space for a mug and some cookies.

If you are not using them as coasters or mug rugs, make several and hang them along a ribbon as a leaf garland.
