A DIY and easy to follow tutorials on how to sew oversized reversible beach bag and has pockets with the zipper, it will fit several large beach towels and all the necessities you need for summer fun at the beach or water park with family and friends.
How To Make An Oversize Beach Bag
I went to pick up threads to the fabric store when I saw this beautiful outdoor fabric print. It is a turtle print, but the color is perfect for the breezy beach feel. So yes, as you guess I got two meters of this fabric. At that time I had no idea what should I make with it but I love the print.
I thought that I still have the similar theme print from this cushion cover. Since both are outdoor fabric, it will be perfect to make a summer theme craft. So, here I make a reversible beach bag. It has zippers on both sides. It is as simple as sewing several rectangle pieces of fabric.
What You Need To Make Reversible Beach Bag
- Easy Reversible Beach Bag Pattern
- Two different outdoor fabric prints.
- Outdoor thread
- 2 pcs of 7 inches zippers
- Ruler
- Pins
- Washable fabric marker
- Scissors
- Seam ripper (not shown on the image)
Reversible Beach Bag Tutorial
Follow the number displayed on pictures (#number) for the step by step tutorials:
From each fabric pieces, cut it into several rectangles
Fabric A:
- 1 piece of 39 inches x 31 inches (body)
- 1 piece of 6 inches x 31 inches (top body)
- 2 pieces of 24 inches x 3 inches (bag’s handle)
Fabric B:
- 1 piece of 39 inches x 31 inches (body)
- 1 piece of 6 inches x 31 inches (body)
- 2 pieces of 24 inches x 3 inches (bag’s handle)
The 0,25 inches for seams allowance already included on the measurement of fabric pieces. I make the bag’s handle wider, as I like it that way for a comfortable grip.
#2. Sew the bag’s handles.
Pair one pieces of fabric A with B with the right side is inside. Sew straight line along the length. Turn it inside out. Now you have the right side of the fabric on the outside. Repeat the process for another set.
#3. Sew the body pieces together
Pair one part of the large rectangle fabrics with the smaller one. Use the pin to secure it before sewing the fabric. Straight stitch and basting the fabric before placing the zipper.
See how to basting for easy removal on this post How To Sew A Zippered Cushion Cover. If you click the link, there is easy to follow tutorials on how to sew the zipper.
Repeat the process for another set.
#4. Sew a zipper on
Place the zipper in the middle on the wrong side of the fabric and secure it with a pin. Straight stitch along the zipper line from end to end of the fabric. By sewing the zipper now, you are also topstitching the material at the same time.
#5. Sew the body pieces
Fold the body piece in half with the right side of the fabric inside. Straight stitch on edge (the red line show on the image #5).
#6. Make a boxed corner
Marked the fabric for how big is the bottom corner of the bag you want. Here I show you that I marked it for 4 inches. Straight stitch along the marked line. You don’t need to cut the corner after sewing it, as it will be inside the bag. Repeat this process for all four of bottom corners.
#7. Assembly the body part of the bag
Turn one of the body pieces inside out. So you will have one piece of the body that has the right side of the fabric on the outside. Make sure the top of the bag is even.
#8. Sew the bag’s handle
Place the bag’s handle on top of the bag opening. Fold the top edge of the bag and pin it. Sew a straight line along the top side of the bag. It will look like a top stitch.
#9. Sew the pocket
Use the seam ripper to remove the basting off. Now you will see where the zipper is. Straight sew along the red line show on the image #9 for a pocket. Repeat the process for another side of the fabric. So you will have a bag with two pockets.
#10. The finish looks.
Now you have the beach bag ready with a big pocket on the outside, and another one is inside of the bag. As you can see, the pouch is where my phone is.
#11. Reversible bag
Flip the bag inside out. Now you have a different print show on the outer bag with the same pocket placement.
#12. The size of the bag
If you see on the image#12, that is my tween daughter whom taller than me carrying the bag. This beach bag is huge. It fit for four large size beach towels or six of the smaller size towels.
There is still so much room for some other things you need like snacks, water bottle, change clothes or sunscreens. There is also one large pocket on the outside and another one inside of the bag fit for phone and wallet.
There you go, how easy it is. The beach bag is reversible. When you want different print on the outside, you need to flip it inside out.
I make a huge beach bag with the final measurement is 28.5 inches x 18.5 inches x 4 inches, because I always bring so much stuff to the beach or water park. If you would like to make a smaller one, you can reduce the size of the fabric for the body pieces.

You’re such a creative person! I used to saw quite a good few things (little wallets, glasses pouches) but I never attempted actual bags. You make it sound very easy and doable though so I’m going to go and try and find a fabric shop here (I moved countries and don’t know too many shops just yet).

Very cute bag. I am actually looking for a pattern for a great reversible spread for a kid’s queen size bed. It hasn’t been as easy as I thought. I’m seeing toddler beds and full size beds. Queen is so hard to find.
Crafty For Home
Thank you, the best thing you can do and it will be easier to work with is try to find two different print of queen size flat sheet. Then sew it together, sew the zipper on or button for the closure, it always work this way!
