Fish emulsion is beneficial for tomato plants as it is one of the best natural source fertilizers containing essential nutrients and minerals the plant needs.

What Is Fish Emulsion

Fish emulsion is a fast-acting natural fertilizer that contains a high amount of nutrients without burning the plant. It is usually a byproduct of the fishery industry.

  • Fish Emulsion For Tomato Fertilizer

The fertilizer usually comes in a liquid concentrate form, which is easier to use by adding a specific amount into the watering can.

The fish emulsion doesn’t necessarily come from the ocean source. It also can come from freshwater fish, which has the same benefit for the plants.

Back in my parent’s house in the tropical region, we have this pond with hundreds of freshwater fish. My parent would water the garden from the ponds.

We rarely fertilize the plants. The water from the ponds seems to help the plants grow.

So, if you missed one ingredient for the tomato planting hole, you can apply fish emulsion solution during the growing season.

Fish Emulsion Nutrients

The ready-made Alaska fish emulsion I use contains the amount of NPK ratio 5-1-1. In addition, the fish emulsion contains trace elements like sulphur, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and beneficial microbe to feed the soil.

As a natural soil conditioner, the fish emulsion will make healthy soil for healthy growing plants.

  • Unripe Green Tomatoes

Fish emulsion has a mild odour. Most often, the manufacturers claim it odourless.

Because it is a natural derivative, you might be aware of the critters around the garden that dig the ground where you apply the fish emulsion. You might want to try it in a specific area first to see any damage to the garden from the critters.

I have no problem with critters when I put the fish on the planting hole by the raised garden box and containers. But I would imagine the situation in an open garden bed.

Is Fish Emulsion Good For Tomato Plants

Fish emulsion is suitable for so many types of plants and lawns. Roses, tomatoes, vegetables, trees, and shrubs can benefit from the fish emulsion.

  • Tidy Treat Tomato Seedling

The nitrogen amount on fish emulsion will help green leafy vegetables like kale, spinach, lettuce, and herbs like parsley, cilantro, basil, oregano, sage. It is a natural source and won’t burn the plants.

But with any other fertilizer, you still have to be careful. You might get too much nitrogen if there is already present on the soil. So it is best to test the ground first before using the fish emulsion. Always follow the packaging label instructions if you use the store-bought one.

  • Vine Ripen Tomatoes

The fish emulsion contains nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and other trace minerals that benefit tomato plants. It is fast-acting fertilizer, and the calcium content will help prevent blossom end rot from happening.

The fish emulsion is one of the best fertilizers for tomato plants. It gives tomato seedlings a boost when you transplant them to the garden. In addition, the nitrogen content promotes healthy tomato leaves.

How To Apply The Fish Emulsion On Tomato Plants

Because it is a fast-acting fertilizer, you can water the newly transplanted tomato seedlings with this solution mixed in the watering can right on the base of the plant.

  • Roma Tomato

You can also water the planting hole first before putting the tomato root ball on the ground. The phosphorus and potassium content on the water solution boosts the root and promotes a healthy root system.

How Often To Apply Fish Emulsion

Mix the emulsion with the water as it says on the packaging label. Water the tomato plants twice a week or as directed on the packaging label with the fish emulsion solution for maximum growth.

It is always better to water the tomato plants on the ground level in the early morning. Watering them on an earlier day will give soil surface time to dry up before night comes.

Homemade Fish Emulsion

There are so many manufactured-made fish emulsions ready to use. This one is the most brand I use.

Suppose you have access to the fishery in your local area or grocery store that carries seafood. You might want to try making a homemade fish emulsion that you brew a couple of fish heads or scraps with some other ingredients in a half-covered bucket for a few weeks. You might get more amount of concentrates than the store-bought one.

Homemade and ready-made ones will have the same or more nutrient contents, as these are natural fertilizers. The difference is that the store-bought fish emulsion is much more convenient.

  • Picked Tomatoes

For a reminder, natural source fertilizer is not only fish emulsion. Kelp meal, compost, kitchen scraps like eggshells, aged manure, worm casting, bone meal, blood meal are good sources of natural fertilizers.
