Easy Heart Fabric Yo Yo

Use a hand needle and a simple straight stitch. There is no need to use a sewing machine for this project.
The heart shape template has a straight edge on top. This edge will make a nice heart shape once it is stitched.
Use two buttons for the front and back if you want to make a keychain, like in the picture below. Use the lobster clasp and keyring for the keychain hardware.
The template is 4.25″ wide, so it fits on the charm pack fabric size, which is 5″ square. Use any scrap fabric if you don’t have any charm pack fabric available.
Of course, you can make a larger or smaller heart fabric yo-yo than this one by using an enlarged template or creating your template and a different size fabric sheet.
Supplies To Make Heart-Shaped Fabric Yo Yo
The best fabric for making fabric yo-yo is any lightweight fabric type like a cotton quilt, organza, sateen, or silk. I used cotton quilt fabric for this project.

Print the template, and trace it on the fabric.
Start sewing using a straight stitch from one of the corners on the top indent.
Fold the fabric 0.25″ as seam allowance, and keep stitching around the heart shape to the other corner of the top indent.
There is no need to fold or stitch on the straight edge on the top.
Pull the thread until the fabric edge gathers in the middle, and ensure the thread is not breaking. Knot the thread.
It is going to be a semi-circle shape yo-yo now.
Shape the yo-yo to resemble a heart shape by pulling the edge gently, and position the gathered stitch in the middle close to the top indent.
Cut the ribbon 3″ long, then seal the ribbon cutting edge with a lighter to prevent fraying.
Fold the ribbon in half, and put it between a button and fabric in the middle.
Stitch the front button, ribbon, and another button in the back at the same time.
Attach the keyring to the ribbon, then attach the lobster clasp to the keyring.
Your heart fabric yo-yo is ready to use now.
Tips For Using Heart Fabric Yo Yo
Before adding ribbon and a button, you can hot glue or stitch one button on top of the stitched fabric edge. Then, use the heart fabric yo-yo for various accessories and DIY decor.
DIY Garland
Use it for garland like this DIY Valentine’s garland, by hot glue or stitch the yo-yo into a long piece of ribbon.
Then decorate the mantel or any room with the garland. It is easy and inexpensive Valentine’s day decor.
DIY Wreath
Make multiples fabric yo-yos with uniform or various colours, prints and buttons, then hot glue them on the foam ring wreath or a wire wreath frame.
Hang the heart fabric yo-yo wreath in your foyer, dining room, front door, or any room around your house. I made one colour fabric yo-yo for the fall wreath. It is super easy to make.
Clothing Embellishment
Stitch the fabric yo-yo into clothing or accessories to complete the outfit, like a DIY fabric necklace, DIY earing, or hat decoration.
DIY Hair Accessories
Hot glue the fabric yo-yo into hair pin, hair clips, hair elastic, and headband. Or hot glue it on the paper clips for your DIY stationery.
Keychain and Backpack Charm
Once you attach the ribbon, as shown in this tutorial, you can use it as a keychain or backpack charm.
It is an easy and quick Valentine’s day gift for everyone or any other occasion, like birthday party favours. Pair it with the lollipop holder for a fun and sweet treat.
The image above uses the ruffled wristlet with the fabric keychain.
