Round bowl cozy from fabric.

I gifted several of this bowl cozy version for Christmas, and everyone raves about it. The Round Bowl Cozy is reversible, washable, and stackable for easy storage.

Supplies To Make a Round Bowl Cozy

If you use layer cake size fabrics, simply cut them into a 10″ diameter circle. If you use a fat quarter fabric, you will get two 10″ diameter circle pieces, and some extra leftover fabric.

Green bowl on the bowl cozy.

Use all 100% cotton for fabric, batting, and thread if you want to use it in the microwave as a bowl cozy.

Disclaimer: Even though this item is 100% cotton, and it can be use in the microwave, Crafty For Home and I are not responsible for any issue that may arise from microwaving food using a bowl cozy you made from this tutorial. Please follow the instructions on your appliance manual or the food packages for warming up food in a microwave. Any appliance may have different capabilities.

Blue fabric and cotton batting.

Put each cotton batting on the wrong side of each fabric.

Sewing two round fabrics.

Fold the material in half, pinch both edges of the fold, or use the marker to mark the spot on both edges. Open the fold up, then fold it again in half on the other side, mark both edges of the fold.

Draw a line to connect each pinched or marked spot, so that you now have two lines that resemble a plus symbol. Sew along each line.

Measure 1″ left and right on the edge from the stitched line. To make the dart, measure 2.5″ on each stitched line from the edge toward the center.

Draw a line from the 1″ marked spot to the 2.5″ marked spot. See the image below for details.

Measuring the dart for the bowl holder.

Flip the material so the right side of the fabric is facing up. Fold the material in half along the stitched line.

Sewing the dart for the bowl holder.

Pin each dart, and sew the darts so it resemble a fabric bowl. Trim each dart 0.25″ from the stitched line.

Sewing the round fabric edge.

Pin the two fabric bowls with the right sides facing each other. Sew along the edge with 0.25″ seam allowance, and skip 2.5″ for the opening gap.

Turning blue fabric right side out.

Turn the bowl cozy right side out through the opening gap. Fold the opening gap, then press the bowl cozy with a clothes iron.

Sewing thread on fabric basket.

Topstitch along the edge and close the opening at the same time.

Optional: Sew 1″ on the center of the bowl cozy or topstitch along both the stitched lines to help both fabric pieces stay in shape after washing.

The Size Of The Round Bowl Cozy

Once it finishes sewing, the final size of this bowl cozy is about 8″ in diameter at the top and 2″ tall. The cozy fits a 6″ to 8″ bowl.

If you don’t use it as a bowl holder, it can be used as a fabric bowl itself or as a fabric basket for small items like threads, bead jewelry, hair accessories like scrunchies, or even coins.
