The reverse applique design on this coaster is a similar technique to this flower-shaped coaster. The coaster is approximately 6″ x 5″ in size. So it is a perfect fit for the mug.
Supply To Make Fabric Hexagon Coaster
This coaster uses two different hexagon templates.
Use four layers of fabric for this project, preferably two different prints and colours, to contrast the center hexagon and the coaster shape.
- Layer-cake size fabric (10″ squares) or fabric scraps, or at least 6″ squares
- Hexagon coaster template
- Disappeared ink fabric marker, the dual-purpose fabric marker is my favourite
- Quilt batting, I use cotton batting
- Pin or quilting clips
- Thread
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Chopstick
- Sewing machine
- Ironing machine

You can make your hexagon templates with 2″ on each side for the center reverse applique hexagon (A) and 3″ on each side for the final coaster shape (B), or print the template here.
Helpful tips: if you are making your own template, to make the same side hexagon, all inner angle is 120°.
To make one hexagon coaster, you will need the following:
- Three sheets of 7″ square fabrics with matching print or colour for the front layer with the reverse applique method and the backing.
- One sheet of 7″ square fabric with contrasting print and colour for the middle layer (different print and colour from the front and backing layer).
- One sheet of 7″ square batting.
Pin together two square pieces of fabric for the front layer, with the right side of the fabric facing each other.
Fold the fabric in half and mark the folding spot. Then, fold it again on the other half, and mark the folding spot. Draw a line to connect the marking spot.
Fold hexagon templates A and B in half, and mark the folding spot. Then fold it again on the other side in half, and mark the folding spot. Draw the line to connect each opposite spot.
Trace the 2″ template (A) in the middle of the fabric by matching the lines on the template and fabric.
Sew along the traced line.
Clip the hexagon shape inside the stitched line with 0.25″ seam allowance.
Clip the extra fabric along the seam allowance on each corner, like making the fringe cut, and make sure not to cut the stitched line.
Turn the fabric right side out. Press it with the ironing machine.
Pin all material together or use quilting clips in this order, the middle layer with the right side facing down, batting, the backing layer with the wrong side facing down, and the front layer with the reverse applique hexagon shape.
To make the reverse applique precisely in the middle of the coaster, put the hexagon template A in the center, then put the 3″ hexagon template (B) on top of it.
Match all the lines between both templates. Trace the 3″ hexagon template (B) on the fabric.
Sew along the traced line of the hexagon B.
Trim the fabric with 0.25″ seam allowance from the stitched line.
Clip each corner to reduce bulk.
Turn the hexagon coaster right side out through the center hexagon opening.
Push each corner with the chopstick.
Press it with the ironing machine. Then top stitch along the hem around the center hexagon.
Reversible Hexagon Fabric Coaster
This DIY hexagon coaster has the reverse applique hexagon shape in the front and stitched line hexagon shape in the back.
Even though the reverse applique is not on both sides, the coaster is reversible, so you can use both sides.
If you want to make a larger coaster or turn it into a hexagon mug rug, you can make your own templates, use larger fabrics, and use the same technique with this tutorial for an easy project.
