When talking about perennial flowers, I like the non-invasive ones, fast growing, low care, and easy to grow from seeds. While most perennial flowers will bloom in the second year of its life, but it is worth a try to start it from seed and save you money for your gardening needs.

Perennial Flower For Full Sun

Alyssum-basket of gold
While it has a similar name to the annual sweet alyssum that is useful for tomato companion planting, but this flower has a yellow bloom and larger leaves that grow in full sun to partial shade.

This plant is one of the mint family and very easy to grow from seed. I start the plant from seed 8 weeks before the last frost, and it blooms in the summer of the same year.

You can direct sow the seed as soon as the ground is workable after the danger of the hard frost. Anise hyssop will attract pollinators especially bees. The flower has a minty anise scent.

Both ways grow at the same rate, and it blooms in the spring to summer in the following year. This low growing flower grows in full sun to partial shade, and it is perfect for a rock garden.

Plant black-eyed susan in the full sun. Pair it with coneflower or autumn joy for late summer garden color.

Catmint (Nepeta x faassenii)

Catmint has purple flowers bloom from spring to fall that is excellent for the border or line the pathway. If you are limited to grow lavender due to soil condition, for example, grow catmint to substitute lavender, and cats would love your yard during the summer.

I grow Walker’s Low catmint throughout the garden in the sun and partial shade. I like the benefit of this plant to attract pollinators especially bees.

Creeping thyme
I sprinkle the seed outside in the early spring, and it grows quick to fill up the gap between the rock garden. Creeping thyme is excellent for ground cover.

Lavender
I start a Munstead lavender variety from seeds indoors 8 weeks before the last frost. While it takes longer to reach the nice clump but it is easy to plant it from seed.

I have clay soil, so to grow lavender, I replace the clay with well-drained soil and put some gravels around the base of the plant to create heat for the plant. Lavender grows best in the full sun, and it blooms from late spring to mid-summer.

Salvia

Salvia will self-sow so you will get more seedlings for free. I move the clump throughout the garden without any problem in the spring after the hard frost pass.

Perennial Flower For Partial Shade

Delphinium
This beautiful flower is hardy to zone 3, and it comes with blue, mauve, purple, indigo, rose, white. I start delphinium from seed by direct sow outside in late spring up to early summer.

Once you prepare the planting area with plenty of organic matter and well-drained soil, you just scattered the seeds and cover it with about 1/2 inch of soil, water it and keep it moist. The seeds will germinate within 2 weeks, and it will continue into young plants, then go dormant in the winter.

These plants will start flowering in the next year around late spring to summer. If you let it go to seed, delphinium will self-sow, and you will have more plants for free.

Lupine
I grow lupine seed indoors 8 weeks before the last frost. The plant is blooming in the late spring of the following year, and it self-sow freely. Lupine is one of the legume family, and it fixes nitrogen in the soil.

The leaves form a ladder-like pattern comes in green or variegated one. The flower is purple bell shape.

Most perennials that grow from seeds will bloom in the second years. Most perennial seeds also need cold stratification, this can be done by putting the seed in the fridge for a certain amount of times if you start planting the seeds indoors.

If you get seeds from the package, it usually says the detail on the label if you need to give the seed cold stratification first before planting.
