Use this tutorial to make a reversible dinner plate cozy, easy to use and protect your hand from the hot plate when warming up food in a microwave.
What Is Dinner Plate Cozy
The dinner plate cozy is a piece of layered fabric with batting to use as a plate holder, which has the same purpose as the bowl holder. Preferably use it in the microwave, so your hand is comfortable to hold the hot plate.

Some days we like to sit around the dining table to enjoy a family meal time, but when it is a busy day, warming up food in the microwave is just a better option for a TV dinner.
Supply To Make Dinner Plate Cozy
Since you will use it for the microwave, all materials must be 100% cotton.
The dinner plate cozy measurement is for a standard-size dinner plate which is 10.5″, so you will need two sheets of 13″ square cotton fabric and two sheets of 13″ square cotton batting. Also, use 100% cotton thread.
You will get one plate holder from two sheets of fat quarter cotton fabric or three cozies from one-yard fabric, which is 36″ x 44″. If there is enough leftover fabric from one-yard size, it would be enough size fabric to make ice cream pint cozy.
Disclaimer: Even though this item is 100% cotton and it is for microwave use, Crafty For Home and I are not responsible for any issue that may arise from microwaving food using a dinner plate cozy you made from this tutorial. Please follow the instructions on your appliance manual or the food packages for warming up food in a microwave. Any appliance may have different capabilities.

Cut the material into these measurements:
- 2 sheets of 13″ square cotton fabric
- 2 sheets of 13″ square cotton batting
Put one sheet of fabric on the flat area with the wrong side of the fabric facing up, and put the batting on top of it.
Fold the material in half, mark the folding spot and draw the line to connect each opposite marking spot. Fold the other side in half, mark the folding spot, and draw the line to connect each opposite marking spot.
Pin the material together or use quilting clips. Draw a diagonal line to connect each opposite corner.
Sew along both diagonal lines.
Draw the line for the dart. Mark 0.5″ left and right from the folding line and 3″ from the edge inward of the folding line.
Connect each marked spot to have a triangle shape for the dart. Repeat measuring the dart area for all four sides.
Fold the material in half, sew along the connected triangle on the dart area, and repeat it for all four darts.
The dart is tiny, so there is no need to trim it. Or trim it 0.25″ from the stitching line if you prefer.
Repeat all processes of measuring and sewing for the other half of the plate cozy.
Put both cozy together with the right side of both fabric sheets facing each other, and use pins or quilting clips to keep it together.
Draw a line 0.5″ from the edge for seam allowance. Sew along the seam allowance and skip 3″ for the opening gap.
Trim all corners to reduce bulk.
Turn the cozy right side out, and use the chopstick to push each corner.
Press the cozy with the ironing machine.
Topstitch along the hem and close the opening gap.
Your microwave dinner plate holder is ready to use.
This DIY microwave plate cozy is perfect for warming up everyday meal leftover. I love it because leftover foods save me time to cook each day, and some meals have better taste and texture the next day.
Helpful tips: Always put the food on the plate, not directly on the fabric cozy. Using the plate cozy in a microwave for maximum 2 minutes intervals is recommended.
