The tutorial is similar to this cloth napkin, placemat, and oval mug rug. The only different thing is by adding more insulation and measurement.
Supply To Make Casserole Dish Hot Pad
Use two sheets of fat quarter cotton fabric with two different prints on each side for a mix and match, or use a solid colour or the same print on each side. It is customizable to your preference.
You will get one casserole dish hot pad from two fat quarter cotton fabric sheets with the same or different prints. And if you use one-yard fabric, you will get three hot pads with the same print or colour.
Use the cotton batting in between the Insul-Bright to absorb the condensation.

- Chopstick

How To Make A Large Hot Pad
See the Large Hot Pad video tutorial here.
- Cut the fabric into 2 sheets of 13 x 16 inches.
- Cut the Insul-Bright into 2 sheets of 12.5 x 15.5 inches.
- Cut the cotton batting into 1 sheet of 12.5 x 15.5 inches.
Layer all material in this order, with two pieces of fabric on the right side facing each other, Insul-Bright, cotton batting, Insul-Bright.
Ensure the Insul-Bright and cotton batting are in the middle of the fabric between 0.25″ seam allowance. Pin it or use quilting clips.
Sew around the seam allowance and make sure to stitch on the edge of the batting. Skip 4 inches for the opening.
Clip each corner to reduce bulk. Turn the hot pad right side out.
Use the chopstick or pencil to push each corner. Fold the opening inward and press the hot pad with the ironing machine.
Top stitch along the hem and close the opening at the same time.
From here, you can make a simple quilt stitch like a rectangle stitch in the middle, sew diagonal lines to connect each corner, or some vertical lines.
Here is what I do, measure 2″ from the edge. Make a rectangle line in the middle of the hot pad. Topstitch along the rectangle line.
Helpful tips: If you use two different colour fabrics for the front and back, you can use the thread for the top needle to match the front side and another colour thread on the bobbin to match the fabric on the back side hot pad.
As you can see from the above image, A uses different colour threads for the needle and the bobbin. On the other hand, B uses the same colour thread for the needle and the bobbin.
The Size Of The Hot Pad
This oversize hot pad is reversible because both fabrics have the Insul-Bright layer. The final size of the hot pad is approximately 12.5 x 15.5 inches. Even though the seam allowance is 0.25 inches, the thick batting layer makes it close to 12 x 15 inches.
This hot pad is fit for a 9 x 13 inches casserole dish and 11 x 13 inches one. However, it will fit the larger casserole dish. I like the look of the pad peeking by the edge of the bowl.
If you have a different size casserole dish, add at least 3 inches to the bowl’s width and length.
For example: To make a hot pad for an 8 x 6 inches casserole dish, cut both fabrics to 11 x 9 inches and cut batting and Insul-Bright to 10.5 x 8.5 inches.
