Making a reversible casserole cozy or koozie is easy with this tutorial. It will fit the 9×13 rectangle casserole dish and has extra material for holding the dish handle.
Use This Guide To Make 9″ x 13″ Casserole Dish Cozy
One of the useful items to make for the kitchen, meal time, or get-together party is this casserole dish cozy. It has the same purpose as the bowl holder.

It is not only to keep the dish warm when it is ready to serve but also to protect your hand from the hot casserole pan. Also, make it easier for you to carry the hot dish from the kitchen to the dining table.
This rectangular casserole cozy is fit for a 9 x 13 inches pan that holds 3 quarts of volume since most households use this size (well, I only use this size because it fit a lot of meal to feed four to six persons of us).
Supply To Make Casserole Dish Cozy
Use cotton, polyester, or cotton mix polyester batting for this cozy. If you plan to use the cozy on the microwave, then only use 100% cotton batting like this Pellon Wrap N Zap.
If you want to make one with insulation, use the Insul-Bright Insulated Lining to help keep the dish warm and double layer it with the quilt batting to absorb condensation. The layering would be the same as this hot pad. If you use Insult-Bright, the casserole dish cozy is not for microwave use.
Use the coordinated fabric from two fat quarter fabric sheets to mix and match the look on both sides of the dish cozy, or use half-yard fabric for the same print and colour on both sides.
You will have one casserole dish cozy from two fat quarter fabric sheets or half-yard fabric.
The casserole dish cozy has a wider area for the handle on both sides. Since all casserole pan comes in various handle sizes, some are wider, some are shorter, and some have no handle (sometimes I question why there is no handle).
The tutorial will involve some measuring on dart areas. If you want a simple way without measuring it, use the 9 x 13 casserole dish cozy pattern, which is only available as a printable PDF. You can purchase the Casserole Dish Cozy Pattern here for only a few dollars.

- Cut the fabric into 2 sheets of 14 x 21 inches each.
- Cut the batting into 2 sheets of 14 x 21 inches each.
Put one sheet of fabric on the flat surface with the wrong side facing up. Put one sheet of quilt batting on top of it.
Pin it together or use quilting clips.
Mark the spot from the corner to the shorter side 2.5 inches (A), then mark the spot straight inward from A 1.25 inches to B, then mark inward 2.75 inches from B to C.
Mark the spot from the same corner to the longer side 3.25 inches (D), then mark the spot inward 2.75 inches to C.
Draw the line within each spot, A, B, C and D, so you will have the dart area (triangle). Then, repeat the process for all corners.
Draw diagonal lines between darts across each other. Fold the material in half short wise, mark the folding spot, then draw the line to connect these spots.
Sew along the diagonal lines and the middle line.
Cut these four corners along the marked lines. Then, draw a line on the dart (the shorter side) 0.25 inches for the seam allowance.
Fold the dart, and use the quilting clips to keep it together. Next, sew along the marked seam allowance and backstitch on the stitch’s beginning and ending. Repeat for all corners.
Repeat the process of measuring the dart, sewing the other fabric piece, and batting.
Put together both sides of the casserole dish cozy with the right side of the fabric facing each other. Mark 0.25 inches seam allowance along the edge, making it easier for you to sew.
Sew straight along the marked line for seam allowance and skip 4 inches for the opening.
Make a fringe cut on each corner around the dart area, be careful not to cut the stitch off.
Trim each corner of the handle area to reduce bulk.
Turn the casserole dish cozy right side out through the opening.
Push each corner with the chopstick.
Press the cozy with the ironing machine. And fold the opening gap inward to have a smooth edge.
Topstitch along the hem and close the opening gap at the same time.

Thank you for sharing this! Can you help me with the dart portion? I’m just wondering if there is a difference from point B to point C . Can the whole line just be 4 inches from A to C ? Or should there be something different when you’re going from B to C ? Thank you !
Crafty For Home
Hi Stephanie, the line from A to C is not a straight line. A to B is a straight line, but B to C is slightly in angle. This is to accommodate the awkward angle at the casserole bowl corner. The 9 x 13 inches Pyrex casserole dish has a slight curve angle depth on the corner. It is not precisely a straight-angle corner. I hope it helps.
