Use this easy sewing tutorial to make an Apple Coaster, an easy fall-season project that is great for using up fabric scraps or upcycling.
Easy To Make Apple Coaster With One Or Two Color Fabrics
In my area, apple season usually begins at the end of August, when we harvest fresh apples from the trees. To celebrate this soon-to-be fall season, make this DIY apple coaster with just one colour fabric for both sides or mix and match two different color fabrics.

The color block coaster from fabric is also an easy sewing project by mixing two different fabric color or prints on each side.
Supply To Make Apple Mug Mat Or Coaster
If you use a piece of fat quarter fabric, you will get four apple-shaped coasters with the same color or print on both sides. Then, use a little green and brown fabric for the stem and leaf. I use the brown fabric left over from this sunflower coaster.
Use two pieces of fat quarter fabrics to make different prints and colors on both sides of the coaster. You can make the apple coaster from fabric scraps or upcycle worn-out shirts or pillowcases.

For the leaf, pin the interfacing with the right side of both green fabrics facing each other. Trace the leaf template on the green fabric.
Sew along the traced line, and skip 1″ for the opening gap. Trim the fabric 0.25″ away from the stitched line. Turn the leaf fabric on the right side out through the opening.
Use a chopstick to push all corners. Fold the opening inward and press the fabric leaf with a clothes iron. Draw some leaf vein on the fabric, then topstitch along the edge and the leaf vein by sewing it back and forth following the line.
For the stem, fold the brown fabric half lengthwise, open it, and fold both long edges toward the center fold. Then, fold it again so the folded edges are aligned. Topstitch along both edges.
For a two-colors apple coaster, pin both fabric squares with the right side facing each other. Draw two lines on the fabric 2.75″ from the right and left side. Sew along the two lines. Divide the fabric in half by trimming it between the stitched lines.
Press the seam in flat with a clothes iron. Topstitch the seam on both fabric pieces. With the right side of the fabric facing down, trace the apple template in the center so that both fabric colors are equal in size.
Put the batting and one fabric with the right side facing up. Fold the fabric stem in half, then pin it on the top edge of the fabric with the raw edges aligned.
Then, pin the leaf stem beside the brown stem. Place the other piece of fabric with the traced apple template on top of the layer, with the right side of the fabric facing down.
Sew along the traced apple line, and skip 1.5″ on the side for the opening gap. Trim the fabric 0.25″ away from the stitched line
For a one-color apple coaster, fold the other fabric square in half and press the folding line as a center on the top edge. Put the fabric with the right side facing up on top of the batting, then fold the fabric stem in half and pin it on the top center edge of the square fabric with the raw edges aligned. Then, pin the leaf beside the fabric stem.
Place the other piece of fabric on top of the layer, with the right side facing down, then trace the apple template on the fabric.
Sew along the traced apple line, and skip 1.5″ on the side for the opening gap.
Trim the fabric 0.25″ away from the stitched line. Trim the extra batting from the stitched line.
Turn the fabric right side out through the opening gap. Fold the opening inward and press the apple coaster with a clothes iron.
Topstitch along the edge and close the opening at the same time.
The Size Of The Apple Coaster
The apple coaster or mug mat is approximately 4.75″ x 5″ on the apple shape only and 8″ long from the leaf’s pointy corner to the apple’s bottom edge.
This DIY mug mat has enough space for a coffee mug. It is a fun coaster to use during harvest season. It is also great for an apple garland idea.
With so many different coaster shapes, you can switch each based on the occasion theme (below is the list of these fun coasters and mug rugs).
