Make a small drawstring bag from two rectangular pieces of fabric as a quick and easy sewing project for a cutlery pouch or for packing travel essentials.

Small Drawstring Bag

Going for a picnic, weekend travel, or need something to pack a spoon for lunch bag, this drawstring pouch is just the perfect size for that purpose.

The bag is washable. When you don’t use it, fold it and keep it in the drawer.

Supply To Make Cutlery Pouch

The fabric I use here is the leftover from making this Reversible Large Hot Pad, so it is an easy project to use up those fabric scraps.

Cutlery inside the drawstring bag.

Use ribbon or decorative cord for the string, so you can skip making the fabric strap.

  • 1 piece of  4″ x 22″ fabric
  • 1 piece of  1″ x 22″ fabric
  • Disappeared ink fabric marker, I use this dual-purpose fabric marker
  • Quilting clips or pins
  • Pinking Shears
  • Ruler
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Safety pin
  • Chopstick
  • Sewing machine
  • Clothes iron

Long rectangle blue fabric.

To make the small fabric strap for the string, fold the smaller rectangle of fabric in half lengthwise, then open it and fold both long edges toward the center fold.

Making blue fabric strap.

Then fold both long edges again. Topstitch along both long edges.

Trimming blue fabric.

Trim the edge of the larger rectangle of fabric with pinking shears.
With the right side of the fabric facing up, fold the fabric in half toward the short edge, so the right side is now inside.

Sewing the casing for the string.

Sew along both raw edges of the left and right pouch with 0.25″ seam allowance, all the way to 1.5″ below the top edge of the pouch.
Flatten the seam on both top corners, then fold the top edge down, and pin it.

Sewing the drawstring pouch.

Sew along the hem of the folded top edge, so now there is a casing for the string.

Pouch from blue fabric.

Turn the pouch right side out.

Inserting fabric string to the casing.

Thread the fabric string along the casing.

Spoon inside the pouch.

The cutlery drawstring pouch is ready to use now.

The Size Of The Drawstring Bag

The final size of the pouch is 3.25″ x 10″. There is enough space for a set of cutlery.
The bag is also helpful for carrying small items like hair accessories or as a toothbrush bag for travelling.
