I enjoy making cloth napkins. The self-binding cloth napkin is a beautiful one to make and one of the easy ways to hem cloth napkins. Every time I saw some lovely and contrast fabric prints, I like to come up with some ideas to use it for another type of napkins style.

Sometimes, I don’t feel like to throw away the fabric scraps. I know I will use it for another little project. Well, usually, my kids will ask these small pieces of fabrics for making stuff on their dollhouse.
So, if you have some fabric scraps from the previous project, preferably the cotton quilt one, you might want to make simple patchwork. Then use it to embellish cloth napkins.
To make one piece of cloth napkin with the simple patchwork, you will need two sheets of the square cotton quilt. Use the fat quarter bundle will be the easiest one to work. It requires a minimum cutting process.
For the simple patchwork, you definitely can use the scraps. If there are no fabric scraps available, then you can use the jelly rolled bundle quilt cotton fabric.
What You Need To Make Simple Patchwork Cloth Napkins
I used one plain-printed fabric for the front side, and mismatch printed one for the backing. The simple patchwork is from combining the leftover from the mismatch printed fabric.
If you are not using the fat quarter bundle, you would need one yard or one meter of plain-printed fabric for the front side and two sheets of half yard with different print for the backside.
Then cut both fabrics into eight square sizes to make four sets of napkins. The leftover from the printed fabric is for making the patchwork.
There is also a bundle of fat quarter cotton contains up to twelve sheets of plain-printed and mismatch printed you can get online. This way, you don’t have to search for various fabric sheets for this project.
- 4 sheets of solid color or plain-printed fat quarter cotton for the front side
- 4 sheets of various printed fat quarter cotton for the backing side
- Disappeared ink fabric marker
- Pins
- Thread
- Chopstick
- Ironing machine
- Ruler
- Sewing machine
How To Make Simple Patchwork Cloth Napkins
See the Easy Patchwork Cloth Napkins video tutorial here.
The tutorial will be similar to the reversible cloth napkins. So, it won’t take you hours to sew it.
Cut all fabric into 18 inches x 18 inches squares and mark 1/4 inch for seam allowance with 4 inches for opening. Arrange the leftover of printed fabric side by side and sew it together by the longer edge.
Press it with an ironing machine to make it easier when you cut it. Divide the patchwork into four long strips.
Make one straight line, 2 inches from the edge on the right side of the solid fabric. Pin the patchwork strip on the marking line.
Sew it together along the hem of the patchwork strip (wrong side of the fabric strip). Press the patchwork strip with an ironing machine, then flip it so you will see the right side of the patchwork fabric strip.
Fold the raw edge of the patchwork strip in and pin it. Sew the folded edge patchwork strips by topstitching it.
Pin it together one sheet of a solid color square with one sheet of printed square fabric with the right side face each other. Straight stitch along the marking line of seams allowances and skip 4 inches for the opening.
Turn it right side out and use the chopstick to push each corner. Press the napkins with the ironing machine. Topstitch along the hem and close the opening at the same time.
If you don’t have enough leftover fabric from the backing side to make the patchwork, then feel free to use any scraps you may have. Preferably use printed fabric scraps, not the leftover from the front side of the napkins.
But, I was able to use all of the leftovers from the backing side for the patchwork strips and leaving me with the plain-printed scraps that I might use it for another quick sewing project.
Size Of Cloth Napkins
From this project, the final size of the napkins is about 17 inches x 17 inches. This size is perfect for everyday use or special occasions dinner party.
You can make some smaller napkins by using this project. From a yard of fabric, you can get up to eight-piece of napkins. That would be perfect size napkins for picnic or lunch box.
