Turn the long fabric rectangle into a fabric strap for a bag or make it into a shorter strap for a keyfob holder. It is a perfect upcycle fabric scrap project.
Sewing Fabric Strap
When you have too much stash of fabric scraps, it is better to use it for a different sewing project. Especially when you make a purse, you can match the strap from the leftover fabric like this cell phone bag.

The width and length of the fabric rectangle depend on what purpose you need for the fabric strap. The straps can be made from one long piece of fabric or by sewing together several rectangular pieces.
Supply To Make Strap From Fabric
The bag strap is usually from the same print or colour as the bag itself, but for fun, you can use mix-and-match print and colour to make a fabric lanyard or a pet leash.
You can also use one piece of fat-quarter size or jelly rolls fabric bundle if fabric scraps are unavailable.
Quilting cotton fabric, outdoor fabric, home decor fabric, gingham, and linen are easy to work with to make the fabric strap.
You can use a swivel lobster clasp, D ring, or key fob clamp for the hardware attachment.
I use four pieces of 3″ x 13″ each fabric rectangle because I need the fabric strap for a crossbody bag, which is 52″ long and 0.75″ wide and includes the measurement for the tabs to attach the lobster clasp.
To make a different length and width of the strap so you will have the exact measurement for the fabric rectangle you need, determine the length of the fabric strap and add the extra inch for the seam allowance, and the width would be four times the strap’s width.

How To Make Fabric Strap
The video tutorial is also available. You can watch the DIY Fabric Strap video tutorial published on my YouTube channel and subscribe for more videos.
To make a fabric strap from several rectangular pieces, place two strips of fabric together at a 90° angle and both right sides of the fabrics facing each other.
Draw a diagonal line across the corners. Pin both fabric strips.
Sew along the diagonal line. Trim the extra fabric 0.25″ from the stitched diagonal line. Repeat the process to sew all rectangular fabrics together.
Skip the process above to make a fabric strap from one piece of rectangle fabric.
After sewing all rectangle fabrics together, fold the fabric in half lengthwise. Fold both raw edges inward, pin it or use quilting clips
Press the folded fabric with the ironing machine. Sew along the edge for both sides.
From this point, depending on the length of it, the strap is ready to use for any purpose you need.
Attach the key fob clamp if you want to use the strap for the key fob holder, or attach the swivel lobster clasp if you want to use it for the bag strap as it shows on the image above, pet leash, or lanyard.
Helpful tips: Before topstitching both edges, you can use the folded rectangle fabric as a bias tape for various sewing projects, like the bowl cover or this Easter egg placemat.
