Gift wrapping with fabric is easier with this tutorial, and it is reusable, washable, and easily customized with the particular occasion theme.

Use This Tutorial For Easy Gift Wrapping Ideas By Using Fabric Instead Of Paper

There are many ways to wrap the gift, like this red accent wrapping. Unfortunately, paper gift wrap creates a mess with crumpled and torn apart paper pieces everywhere. However, there is a way to create an eco-friendly gift wrap that you can use repeatedly.

Use the reusable gift box, then add a ribbon. The gift box will let the recipient reuse the box for storage or back as a gift box again. The ribbon is reusable for making fabric flowers or hair accessories.

One more eco-friendly wrapping idea is by using fabric for gift wrapping to replace the paper. It is a simple one, but it is a popular gift wrapping originating from Japan called furoshiki.

What Is Furoshiki Gift Wrap

As mentioned above, furoshiki is a traditional gift wrapping in Japan using a cloth. It is as simple as folding the fabric a certain way and making a bowknot on the top. It is simple, beautiful, and serves as a type of art form.

Can Any Fabric Be Used For Furoshiki

Furoshiki cloth is usually square-shaped or rectangle fabric made of silk, cotton, rayon, polyester, satin, linen, gingham, or nylon.

The fabric shouldn’t be too thick but strong enough to hold the weight of the gift and flexible for the easy process to fold and tie.

Art Of Gift Wrapping

Also, you can use any fabric for furoshiki that is easy to fold and available on hand. Even a nice mitered cloth napkin is fantastic for wrapping the gift.

More of daily cloth/fabrics that you can use for wrapping gifts:

  • Scarf, bandana, or handkerchief
  • Receiving blanket
  • Pillowcase
  • Bedsheet (for a larger packaging gift)
  • Fabric table cloth
  • Upcycle shirt, skirt, or t-shirt
  • Kitchen dish towel

How To Wrap A Gift With Fabric

See the Fabric For Gift Wrapping video tutorial here.

You can get a plain or printed quilting cotton fabric for wrapping. The good thing is, those quilting fabrics have unlimited print varieties to match the occasion, and it comes in yard bundles or specific size you need.

Depending on the size of the gift box, make sure you have a fabric with an extra 6-8″ larger than the box.

If the fabric still has the raw edge, you can use pinking shears, zigzag stitch, or serger machine to prevent fraying. Alternatively, turn the fabric into a scalloped napkin or a table cloth by using the mitered corner style.

I happen to have the solid color red and green store-bought napkins for Christmas. It is a polyester material, lightweight but thick enough to hold the gift. The blue one is a piece of fat-quarter size quilt cotton fabric.

The solid color will show better on the picture how to fold and tie a gift wrap. Feel free to use any color and fabric prints you like. I prefer the colorful and fun print for this purpose.

Otsukai Tsutsumi

Lay flat the fabric with the wrong side facing up. I use pinking shears for the decorative edge as well as prevent the fabric from fraying.

Folding Fabric

Put the box in the center.
Fold one corner diagonally on top of the box.

Single Fabric Bow Knot

Fold the opposite corner of the fabric to the top of the box.

Then, fold and bring both the right and left corners of the fabric to the top of the box.
Tie it and make a bow knot.

Yotsu Musubi

Lay flat the fabric with the wrong side facing up. Put the gift box in the center.

First Bow Knot

Gather two opposite corners of the fabric to the middle, tie a knot over the top of the box.

Repeat the process for the remaining opposite corners of the fabric. You will have a knot on top of the first one. You can make double knots to make a bow or tie the top corner with the bottom corner.

Wrapping A Round Gift Box

I haven’t yet to find the name of this one (I am hoping someone can let me know the correct name of this wrapping type). But I came up with this for super easy wrapping.

You only need a piece of ribbon to tie the cloth. I use this ribbon leftover from the ribbon lanyard.

Bunching Fabric

Lay flat the fabric with the wrong side facing up. Put the gift box in the center.
Grab all corners, and bunch it just on top of the box.

Ribbon Knot

Slightly pull the fabric so you will create some nice folds around the top of the box.
Loop the ribbon, tie it and make a bow.

Gift Wrapping

For a simple gift topper, you can add any eco-friendly decoration like a sprig of eucalyptus, spruce, rosemary, fern, cinnamon stick, fresh-cut flowers, dried flowers, and autumn leaves.

The gift recipient can reuse the fabric wrapping as they please. They can also turn it into a cloth napkin or bread basket liner. The ribbon is also reusable for hair ties or back as a gift wrapping decoration.

This one will be a fun gift-giving idea. Ask all family members and friends to wrap the gift with fabric to give to each other on any occasion.

Then ask them to reuse the fabric for wrapping a gift for the next occasion. Surprise, you might get your original gift wrapping cloth back at one point.

Wrapping gifts with fabric can reduce the unwanted mess from the usual torn apart paper wrap. It is also reusable, washable, and you can use it for the upcycle project material.
